The return along the Bog Road, a straight ribbon through lake-dotted moorland, is pure Connemara and adds about an hour to the day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sky Road is a 16km circular loop out of Clifden, climbing high above Clifden Bay to a viewpoint where the Atlantic and its scattered islands open out in every direction. Take the Upper Sky Road for the finest views, passing the romantic ruins of Clifden Castle on the way. The park is free to enter and its trails range from gentle strolls to a proper hill climb. The Diamond Hill loop, a well-made path to a 442m summit, takes a couple of hours and delivers a panorama over the coast, the islands and the Twelve Bens that ranks among the finest in the West.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little further on stands Connemara&#8217;s most famous landmark, Kylemore Abbey. This magnificent Victorian castle was built in the 1860s by Mitchell Henry, a wealthy London doctor and politician, as a romantic gift for his wife Margaret after they honeymooned in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a later owner sold it, Benedictine nuns fleeing Belgium in the First World War made it their home, and they ran a renowned boarding school here for decades, welcoming pupils from around the world. The castle sits mirrored in a still lake beneath wooded mountains, a scene that has become one of Ireland&#8217;s defining images. Its Victorian walled gardens, neo-Gothic church and lakeside setting make it one of the most photographed sights in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The abbey has a restaurant and tea rooms, making it a natural lunch or afternoon stop.
